Please reach us at info@proarms.co.za if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Proficiency is the training course you complete with an accredited training provider, proving you can safely handle and operate a firearm.

Competency is the official certificate issued by SAPS after submitting your proficiency, fingerprints, and background checks. You need competency before you can apply for a firearm licence.

The process involves:

  1. Completing proficiency training with an accredited provider.
  2. Applying for competency at your local SAPS station.
  3. Once competency is approved, applying for a firearm licence (SAPS 271 form) under the relevant section of the Firearms Control Act.
  4. Awaiting approval from the Central Firearms Registry (CFR).

This is the simplified steps, we can assist with the administration requirements to ensure a smooth process.

The main licence sections are:

  • Section 13: Self-defence (1 handgun or shotgun).
  • Section 15: Occasional sport shooting or hunting.
  • Section 16: Dedicated sport shooting or hunting (requires dedicated status).
  • Section 20: Business purposes (e.g. security companies).

It depends on your licence category:

  • Self-defence (Section 13): 1 firearm.
  • Occasional hunting/sport (Section 15): Up to 4 firearms.
  • Dedicated sport/hunting (Section 16): No fixed limit, based on motivation and proof of use.
